Moisture content variation of ground vegetation fuels in boreal mesic and sub-xeric mineral soil forests in Finland

چکیده

Forest fire risk in Finland is estimated with the Finnish Fire Index (FFI), which predicts fuel moisture content (FMC) of forest floor. We studied FMC variation four typical ground vegetation fuels, Pleurozium schreberi, Hylocomium splendens, Dicranum spp., and Cladonia raw humus mature recently clear-cut stands. Of these, six were sub-xeric Pinus sylvestris stands, mesic Picea abies analysed ability FFI to predict compared it widely applied Canadian Weather (FWI). found that addition stand characteristics, layer was highly dependent on species so moistest, driest. In layer, differences among small. Overall, FWI a slightly better predictor than FFI. While generally predicted well, shape relationship varied species. The use auxiliary variables thus has potential improving predictions ignitions risk. Knowledge could also benefit planning timing prescribed burns.

Use of Ers-2 Sar Data for Estimating Soil Moisture and Vegetation Water Content Variations in Boreal Forests

The response of ERS-2 SAR to changes in soil and forest canopy moisture is investigated at a boreal forest test region in Finland. An inversion approach to estimate moisture characteristics from SAR data is applied. The method requires that a priori information on forest biomass (stem volume) and soil type distribution is available. The inversion technique provides estimates that are here, in a...

Characterizing woodland caribou habitat in sub-boreal and boreal forests

Woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) are sensitive to changes in understory vegetation resulting from forest harvesting and are, therefore, of special concern for foresters and habitat biologists. Effective management of this species requires reliable habitat inventories which, because of the large heterogeneous areas over which caribou range, can be costly. We used Landsat Thematic Map...

Soil Moisture Content

The assessment of soil moisture content and surface roughness from remotely sensed data is of primary importance for improving agricultural techniques of conservation farming such as yield forecasts, scheduling irrigations, fertilization. SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) remotely sensed data may provide a powerful tool for indirectly retrieving these agricultural surface parameters over large are...

simulation and experimental studies for prediction mineral scale formation in oil field during mixing of injection and formation water

abstract: mineral scaling in oil and gas production equipment is one of the most important problem that occurs while water injection and it has been recognized to be a major operational problem. the incompatibility between injected and formation waters may result in inorganic scale precipitation in the equipment and reservoir and then reduction of oil production rate and water injection rate. ...
